New figures reveal that more than 5,000 drivers have been fined for parking in disabled bays without a valid Blue Badge on the Isle of Wight over the past six years.

The data, obtained through a Freedom of Information request by Evans Halshaw, forms part of a national study into Blue Badge misuse.

Across the Isle of Wight, a total of 5,428 fines were issued between 2019 and 2024.

Year-by-year figures show how the number of fines has risen in recent years:

  • 2019: 873

  • 2020: 500

  • 2021: 670

  • 2022: 913

  • 2023: 1,068

  • 2024: 1,404

The total value of fines issued over this period was £160,085.33, with over £38,000 collected in 2024 alone.

A breakdown of fines by location shows the areas most affected:

  • High Street, Newport: 752 fines

  • Lugley Car Park, Newport: 444 fines

  • Regent Street, Shanklin: 170 fines

  • Town Lane, Newport: 148 fines

  • Quay Road Car Park, Ryde: 102 fines

Julie Wallman, Divisional Marketing Director at Evans Halshaw, said:

"Disabled parking bays exist to ensure safe and accessible travel for people with limited mobility, whether they’re heading to a supermarket, a medical appointment, or just going about their day.
"When drivers use these spaces without a Blue Badge, it reduces availability for those who genuinely need them.
"These figures show just how common this issue is across the Isle of Wight and the UK, and highlight the importance of keeping accessible spaces available, particularly as more people rely on mobility solutions to support independent living."

The research highlights the ongoing need for awareness around Blue Badge misuse and the importance of keeping these spaces available for those who truly need them.
