The popular Open Gardens event returns to Freshwater Bay on Sunday June 1 from 10am to 5pm.

Organised by Freshwater Bay Residents’ Association (FBRA), the day will see a host of different local gardens open for people to enjoy and maybe gain inspiration for their own horticultural endeavours.

For a minimum donation of £5 per adult (children are free) people can explore all of the eleven gardens taking part.

It’s a cash only event, but people are encouraged to donate more if they are able as profits

will support West Wight Dementia Friendly Choir and the West Wight Dementia Carers Group.

Neil Aplin is chairman of FBRA and is also opening his garden with wife Karen.

He said:

“This has always been an incredibly popular event and really brings the close community of Freshwater Bay together.
"We were keen to hold it again as not only is a fun day, it helps raise money for worthy causes.
"Last time we held the event we were able to share over £1000 between two other local charities; this time we’re hoping for more!"

The gardens on show vary in size and style.

They range from smaller courtyards to larger formal gardens representing many various designs.

One garden features an artist’s studio and a couple have refreshments available to purchase too.

Allan Lockett has been the main organiser responsible for coordinating all the keen gardeners and encouraging them to show off their own private patch.

He says:

“There’s been lots to do from planting to pruning and mowing and mulching ready for the big day on the 1st June.
"So many people have worked hard to present their space, we hope our neighbours enjoy what’s on offer.”
