Two residents at Old Charlton House in Cowes have marked their 69th wedding anniversary with a special celebration.

Frank and Heather Hayward were treated to a lemon cake made by chef Lynn, along with cards and balloons to mark the occasion.

Both born and raised on the Isle of Wight, the couple have deep local roots, with Frank growing up in Newport and Heather in Carisbrooke.

The pair first met while working at Rays Bakery in Newport, where Frank was a baker and Heather worked as a shop assistant.

They were married at St Mary’s Church in Carisbrooke on 27 April at midday, with their reception held at Unity Hall in St Thomas’s Square.

Guests enjoyed a turkey dinner, and the wedding cake was a three-tier creation made by Ray from Rays Bakery.

Heather wore a white full-length dress bought second-hand, carrying a bouquet of red carnations, while her five bridesmaids wore pink and blue dresses.

Frank wore a new suit and tie for the occasion.

The couple recalled enjoying bright sunshine on their wedding day, which allowed for photographs to be taken outside.

They later honeymooned in London, where they enjoyed exploring the city and even saw performer Lonnie Donegan during their stay.

Staff and fellow residents at Old Charlton House helped celebrate the milestone, sharing in the couple’s memories of nearly seven decades together.
