Plans for a new 145-berth marina in Cowes are facing an objection from Island Roads over concerns about the potential impact on the local road network.
Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) has submitted proposals for the development, which include 145 floating berths across pontoons, a 142-metre fixed access walkway and a main pontoon area measuring 120 metres by 220 metres.
Island Roads has told Isle of Wight Council that insufficient information has been provided to assess how much traffic the marina could generate, and whether existing parking provision in the area could cope with any increase in demand.
In its submission, the highways contractor warned the development could have a “significant or severe” impact due to displaced parking pressures, raising an objection on the grounds of design quality for new development and sustainable travel.
However, acting on behalf of CHC, transport planning consultant Valérie Ballorin said the scheme is unlikely to lead to a notable rise in vehicle movements.
A Transport Statement submitted with the application argues that, as the plans do not include facilities such as parking, a boatyard or retail units, the number of additional journeys generated would be minimal.
The statement also concludes that both short and long-term parking demand linked to the marina could be accommodated within the town, describing any impact as “infrequent and temporary” throughout the year.
It adds that the development would not result in any “significant or severe residual impacts” on the surrounding highway network.
Public consultation on the application (26/00159/FUL) is open until April 21, with a decision expected by June 22.
