A new roads policing task force targeting dangerous drivers has been launched by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, with a focus on improving safety on roads across the Isle of Wight.
The new Roads Policing Tasking Team will target motorists committing the so-called Fatal Five offences — the behaviours most likely to cause death or serious injury on roads in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
The offences include speeding, drink or drug driving, using a mobile phone or other distractions at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt, and careless or inconsiderate driving.
Officers will also carry out proactive operations at serious collision hotspots, including locations on the Isle of Wight, as part of efforts to reduce dangerous driving.
Police Sergeant Stephen Phillips, who leads the new team, says the unit will focus on the most dangerous driver behaviours and the roads where the most serious crashes happen across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
He warned motorists that officers could be operating anywhere — including on the Isle of Wight — using unmarked vehicles to identify offenders.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones says making roads safer across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire remains a priority, adding that even a single death on the roads is one too many.
