An Isle of Wight ambulance crew member is using music to support mental health and build confidence in the local community.
Paul Barrett, an Emergency Care Assistant with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, has launched a new club night called Fruitylicious, aimed at giving aspiring DJs — particularly those struggling with low self-esteem—a chance to shine.
The debut event takes place on 1st August 2025 at Strings in Newport, with a diverse line-up of performers. Alongside Paul, performing as DJ Moomin, the night will feature well-known Island names such as Chalk E White and Ronnie Pakes, as well as newcomer DJ Lennox, who will be making her live debut.
Paul said:
"In 2005 I hung up my headphones because the night I was involved with came to an end.
"I decided to call it a day and started a day job.
"Fruitylicious is all about giving a helping hand to local DJ’s who have never had the chance to play in a club.
"Some people, (in a similar vein to myself) used to struggle with no confidence/low self esteem and found it impossible to put themselves out there.
"Some people just get overlooked.
"The night itself is about old school values, a place where we can go to get away from the stress of everyday life - keeping ticket price as low as possible to try and help with cost of living and offer a cheap night out where possible.
"I have made it through and just want to move forward and live my life.
"I want to have some fun and make memories along the way - DJ'ing for me is a privilege - no ego - just a humble 50 year-old trying to do something positive."
Through Fruitylicious, Paul hopes to create a safe, inclusive space where people can build confidence, express themselves creatively, and feel supported.
The launch event promises a mix of uplifting beats and community spirit, with hopes that it will become a regular feature on the Island’s nightlife scene.
