A new digital radio service is being rolled out across the Isle of Wight, bringing more choice to listeners and marking a significant step forward for local broadcasting.

Wight Digital Radio has confirmed its small-scale DAB multiplex will begin launching from 18 April, with stations joining in phases over the following weeks.

At launch, the service is expected to reach around 80% of the Island’s population, with plans to expand coverage further in the future as more funding becomes available.

The multiplex has been set up as a community interest company through a partnership between Isle of Wight Radio and Vectis Radio, with both organisations aiming to strengthen the future of local radio on the Island.

Listeners will initially be able to tune in to eight stations, offering a mix of music, specialist programming and community content.

These include Isle of Wight Radio and its Retro service, alongside Vectis Radio, Angel Isle of Wight, Outreach Radio, Swinging 60’s, Our Island Radio and Heritage Chart Radio.

Kelvin Currie of Vectis Radio commented:

"It’s great that we will be able to secure the digital future of some existing local stations and increase listener choice with some new stations."

Claire John, Managing Director of Isle of Wight Radio, added:

"We are delighted to have been a major funder for the multiplex which will benefit both our station and others.
"We hope to raise further funding to cover the whole of the island in due course."

Wight Digital Radio is a Community Interest Company (CIC) established through a

partnership between Isle of Wight Radio, the Island’s number one commercial radio station,

and Vectis Radio, the award-winning community broadcaster.

Stations joining the multiplex include:

• Isle of Wight Radio

• Isle of Wight Radio Retro

• Vectis Radio

• Angel Isle of Wight

• Outreach Radio

• Swinging 60’s

• Our Island Radio

• Heritage Chart Radio

This diverse line-up ensures a broad range of programming, catering to audiences across the island with music, community content, and specialist shows.

Wight Digital Radio is also inviting additional stations to join the multiplex.

There are opportunities available for new services, and interested parties can find further details on rates and how to apply by visiting www.wightdigitalradio.co.uk.
