A multi-use hub for community events, refreshments during football matches, and job training will be installed within the grounds of an Isle of Wight school.
County Hall has accepted plans from the Bay CE School to site a ‘huddle catering unit’, housed within a shipping container, on its secondary campus in Sandown.
The initiative’s objectives include better food access, revenue creation, supporting student leaning and strengthening community engagement.
A council decision report on proposal 25/01850/FUL said the container unit’s green metal cladding would appear in keeping with the green playing fields close to the development at the Fairway site.
Explaining the scope of the hub, the school’s agent, ERMC, previously listed services such as daily hot meals and snacks for pupils, on-site food provision for events including parents’ evenings, staff meetings, performances and work experience.
The consultants also mentioned community services outside school hours including catering for groups, sports clubs and charities, partnerships with farms, suppliers and social enterprises and a weekend or evening café.
ERMC said:
“With a balanced mix of daily student revenue and regular community bookings, the unit is expected to become self-sustaining within 12 to 24 months and generate surplus funds that can support broader school initiatives.”
Tyler Frankling, who lives in Ryde, told the council:
“My daughter plays football at The Bay secondary and the provision of catering will improve the experience during match days.
“The Isle of Wight Girls League hosts its summer tournament at The Bay and this will also provide a chance for players and supporters to get refreshments without having to leave the site, which is better for those attending as well as provides additional income to support the school in improving their sports facilities even further.”
