New Chapter Planned For Ryde’s Long-Empty Terminus Hotel

A prominent building in an Isle of Wight seaside town, sat empty for years, could become a ‘high-quality’ new hotel.

Dr Malik has submitted a proposal for the conversion of the former Terminus Hotel at 70 and 70A St Johns Road in Ryde, which has fallen into a poor state of repair.

Up for auction in 2025, the site was previously converted into two large maisonettes and once home to a gym, according to Clive Emson.

The development would secure the future of the building through carefully considered changes which improve its appearance while providing short-stay visitor accommodation and on-site management facilities, Dr Malik’s agent, Holbrook Architectural Services said.

As well as ten bedrooms, plans would see the hotel fitted with a guest lounge and dining area.

A Design and Access Statement said:

“The scheme makes efficient use of an existing building, supports tourism, encourages sustainable transport and delivers a significant visual improvement to this important corner site.

“A Noise Impact Assessment has also been undertaken which concludes that the proposed hotel use is suitable for the site, subject to standard acoustic mitigation measures which can readily be incorporated into the development.”

The proposal gives rise to no significant overlooking, overshadowing or privacy loss beyond the current situation, the architectural designer said.

Other benefits cited include the provision of secure cycle storage and the restoration of lost architectural features.

The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on proposal 26/00952/FUL ends on October 2, and a decision is scheduled for October 20.
