New Chairman Appointed At Isle Of Wight Red Squirrel Trust

The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust has a new Chairman following the appointment of local solicitor and long-standing Trustee Nicholas Gurney-Champion.

He takes over from Helen Butler MBE, who has led the charity for the past 21 years and was one of its founding members.

Nick was appointed following a vote at the Trust's latest Trustee Meeting.

He has paid tribute to Helen for more than two decades of work protecting the Island's red squirrel population, saying the charity would not be where it is today without her "extraordinary enthusiasm, commitment and tireless work".

Helen will remain closely involved with the Trust, continuing as Woodland Manager alongside her scientific work supporting red squirrel conservation.

One of the major achievements during her time as Chair was the purchase of 27 acres of woodland, previously owned by the Forestry Commission.

The Trust is now working to transform the site into suitable natural habitat for red squirrels, with further woodland acquisitions also being considered.

Expanding the charity's work with Island communities is another priority, including helping residents understand how simple changes to their gardens and local surroundings can benefit red squirrels.

The Isle of Wight is one of only a handful of places in the UK where red squirrels continue to thrive, with suitable habitat for an estimated 3,500 animals.

The Trust says its work is increasingly important as red squirrels face continued pressures elsewhere in the country.

It is currently looking for volunteers to help with fundraising and talks to local groups, as well as people interested in becoming Trustees and helping shape the charity's future.
