A motorcyclist has been sent to hospital with serious injuries following a collision in East Cowes in the early hours of Monday.
The collision has prompted Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary to refer itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as there was thought to have been prior police contact.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and IW Constabulary said:
"Just after midnight, officers responding to a separate incident saw a motorcyclist riding at dangerous speeds along Whippingham Road and then leaving the carriageway in a single vehicle collision.
"The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s from East Cowes, suffered serious but not life threatening injuries and is being treated in hospital."
