The Ministry of Defence is investigating reports that a Russian naval vessel fired warning shots at a UK-registered yacht in the English Channel yesterday (Tuesday).

The alleged incident is reported to have taken place at around 11:40 BST in waters between southern England and the French coast.

According to reports, the vessel involved was the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich.

It is understood the yacht was sailing approximately 20 nautical miles south of St Catherine's Point when the warning shots were allegedly fired.

The location is outside UK territorial waters.

No injuries have been reported, and there are currently no indications that the yacht sustained any damage.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson has confirmed that officials are investigating reports of an incident in the Channel.

The reported encounter comes just two days after Royal Marine Commandos and officers from the National Crime Agency boarded the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel.

Officials do not currently believe the two incidents are linked.
