A major police response was launched in Ryde last night (Tuesday) after reports of a man approaching members of the public while carrying what appeared to be a firearm.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was called at 21:13 following reports that, between 20:58 and 21:13, a man had been seen acting suspiciously in the West Street area.
The caller told police the man had approached members of the public while holding an item described as resembling a firearm.
Officers carried out an extensive search of the area, assisted by the National Police Air Service helicopter, but were unable to locate either the man or the group he had reportedly approached.
Police also conducted door-to-door enquiries in West Street, asking residents if they had captured any relevant doorbell camera footage that could assist the investigation.
Officers say they spoke to a number of people who were in the area at the time, but no similar reports were received.
Extra patrols will now take place in the area as part of ongoing enquiries, with anyone who has concerns encouraged to speak to local officers.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 44260337024.
