Police are carrying out a thorough search of a property in Wootton this afternoon (Monday) after a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive substance.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary officers attended a residential address on Mary Rose Avenue earlier today, with a presence at both the front and rear of the mid-terraced property.
Shortly before lunchtime, officers in forensic suits were seen entering and leaving the property, with a Police Search Advisor also on site.
The man is being questioned on suspicion of two serious offences: possession of an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose, and possession of a knife in a public place.
He remains in custody at Newport Police Station.
A spokesperson for the Constabulary said:
“Officers will remain at the address while a thorough search is conducted.
"Anyone with information or concerns can speak to one of our uniformed officers at the scene.”
