Man Arrested After Cyclist Left Fighting For Life Following Newport Collision

A 63-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a cyclist was left fighting for his life following a serious collision in Newport.
Emergency services were called to Furrlongs, Pan, near the local shops at around 4.37pm on Monday (December 29) following reports of an incident involving a red electrically-assisted bicycle.
Paramedics attended and found a 44-year-old man from Newport with severe injuries.
Due to the seriousness of his condition, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was deployed, and the cyclist was flown to Southampton General Hospital.
He is understood to be in a critical condition and on life support.
Specialist officers from the Collision Investigation Unit carried out a detailed forensic examination of the scene last night as efforts continue to establish exactly what happened.
Police have since confirmed that a black Ford Transit van is believed to have been involved in the collision.
A 63-year-old man from Godshill has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in custody at Newport Police Station.
The vehicle suspected of being involved did not stop at the scene, and police are now appealing for witnesses and footage.
