Island Roads has met with local community representatives ahead of major carriageway reconstruction works in Wroxall, set to begin in November.

The scheme will see extensive resurfacing on St John’s Road, High Street, and Clarence Road, addressing long-standing concerns about the condition of the roads raised by local councillors and road safety campaigners.

Work was delayed earlier this year due to the closure of Leeson Road and to avoid disruption during the busy summer months.

The project is now scheduled to start on 10 November, pause over the Christmas period to avoid affecting local trade, and then continue into the New Year.

The full project could take up to 12 weeks, during which the roads will be closed 24 hours a day, except for the two-week festive break.

In addition to resurfacing, preparatory work will be carried out to strengthen a section of embankment that suffered a major landslip in 2022.

Island Roads project managers recently met with the Isle of Wight Council member for Wroxall, Lowtherville, and Bonchurch, as well as members of Wroxall Parish Council and bus company Southern Vectis to outline the plans.

An Island Roads spokesperson said:

“The local community has rightly highlighted the need for improvement work.
"The scheme will not only improve ride quality but also tackle the underlying issues that caused the road to deteriorate, reducing future maintenance.
"To do this, we need to rebuild the foundations, which requires a full road closure.
"We want to give the community advance notice so people can prepare accordingly.”

The works will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption, with further details on timings to be announced soon.
