Major restoration work at the Grade II* listed former royal stables at Osborne House has been given the green light.
Plans by The Crown Estate to repair and sensitively refurbish the Osborne Stables in East Cowes have now been granted both planning permission and Listed Building Consent.
Grade II* buildings are classed as particularly important, making up just a small proportion of listed structures across the UK.
The large stable block was designed by Prince Albert in the late 1850s as part of Queen Victoria’s private seaside estate, after the original stables were no longer fit for purpose.
Today, the site forms part of the Osborne Stables Block Business Park, off York Avenue.
A decision report from the Isle of Wight Council says the approved plans are based on a clear understanding of the building’s history and significance.
The work will focus on repairing damage caused by later alterations, while reinstating original features — including elements of the roof, covered walkways and the courtyard surface.
Solar slates will also be installed as part of the roof works, alongside the replacement of a first-floor escape stair.
The report says removing more modern additions and restoring the original design will significantly improve the building’s overall appearance.
While there are some concerns about solar technology becoming outdated over time, planners say this is outweighed by the wider benefits of the scheme.
Seven conditions have been attached to the approval, covering planning policy, conservation and wildlife protection.
