Major Funding For Solent And Isle Of Wight Seagrass Project

A major project to restore seagrass in the Solent and around the Isle of Wight is receiving £800,000 in funding from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks.

The money will support three hectares of seagrass planting, as part of a wider project aiming to restore 17 hectares across southern England and Scotland.

SSEN staff have also been volunteering with Project Seagrass on the Isle of Wight, helping to collect seeds from existing meadows at Yarmouth.

The seeds are now being prepared and stored ahead of planting next spring.

Seagrass meadows provide important habitats for marine wildlife, improve water quality and help protect coastlines, while also storing carbon.

Project Seagrass says the work will provide long-term benefits for coastal communities, marine wildlife and climate resilience.
