East Wight MP Joe Robertson has received backing from the Conservative Opposition for his call to regulate Isle of Wight ferry services amid concerns over high fares and frequent cancellations.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Shadow Communities Minister Paul Holmes criticised ticket prices as “extortionately high” and said Conservative MPs would support Robertson’s amendment to the English Devolution Bill.

The proposal would give the future Mayor of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight powers over ferry pricing and timetabling.

Although the amendment did not pass without government backing, Maritime Minister Kier Mather acknowledged that ferry affordability and reliability remain pressing issues.

He said “urgent action” is needed and highlighted plans to establish a cross-Solent transport chair to gather accurate data and assess solutions.

Robertson welcomed the minister’s comments, saying it marked a “significant step forward” in tackling the longstanding problems faced by Islanders, including impacts on local jobs and the economy.

He added that further discussions with the Department for Transport are planned before Christmas.

Both Isle of Wight MPs, Robertson and Richard Quigley, have been campaigning for closer oversight of ferry services, citing the need for a dependable, affordable service that meets the needs of residents and supports the Island’s economy.
