East Wight MP Joe Robertson has called on the Government to provide greater support for the tourism and hospitality industry during a debate in Parliament.

Speaking in Westminster Hall, Mr Robertson said recent Budget measures had increased pressure on businesses and urged ministers to "make amends" for the impact of changes introduced over the last two years.

During the debate, which was held in his name, Mr Robertson highlighted the importance of tourism to coastal communities such as the Isle of Wight.

He praised local businesses including The Point in Bembridge and Sandown Boulevard, while also referencing the recent closure of The Bugle Inn in Brading.

The MP argued that changes to National Insurance contributions and minimum wage rules had contributed to rising youth unemployment and made it more difficult for businesses to employ younger workers.

He also reiterated concerns over the proposed introduction of an overnight visitor levy, often referred to as a tourism tax, and the planned extension of the Emissions Trading Scheme to ferry routes.

Mr Robertson said additional charges could discourage domestic tourism and place further pressure on businesses that rely heavily on seasonal visitors.

Responding on behalf of the Government, Employment Minister Kate Dearden said a new Visitor Economy Growth Strategy would be published "shortly" and described it as an "ambitious, long-term plan" for the sector.

Addressing concerns about a potential overnight visitor levy, she said the Government recognised the strength of feeling on the issue and that any future powers would be subject to consultation with local stakeholders.
