Hunnyhill Primary School in Newport is celebrating after being rated ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted inspectors — a significant turnaround from its previous “requires improvement” grade.

Inspectors visited on 15 and 16 July, praising the school’s inclusive, friendly atmosphere, strong behaviour and good achievement across the board.

The new report marks Hunnyhill as good in the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision.

Ofsted highlighted the school’s response to past challenges, noting:

  • Teaching now supports all pupils, including those with special educational needs, to achieve well.

  • Lessons are carefully designed to close gaps in knowledge and deepen understanding.

  • Reading has been made a priority since the last inspection.

  • Sport, local trips and visits from authors and emergency services all enrich school life.

Areas for further development include making sure learning activities in some subjects are more effectively planned, and improving how pupils’ recall is assessed.

Headteacher Lisa Steedman said the new report was a testament to the dedication of staff, pupils and families:

“We are thrilled with this outcome, which recognises the huge progress Hunnyhill has made since the last inspection. To achieve ‘good’ in every area is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the hard work of our pupils and the support of our families.”

She added that the school was looking forward to joining Ormiston Academies Trust and “building on strong foundations to continue driving the school forward.”
