Isle of Wight West MP Richard Quigley has urged the Prime Minister to step in over what he described as a “deeply concerning” case involving a young woman placed on an end-of-life care pathway after being treated for anorexia.

Speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions this week, Mr Quigley said the decision to withdraw treatment “directly contradicts national guidance and ministerial assurances that eating disorders are not terminal illnesses.”

He called for an urgent review to ensure the patient and her family receive the care and support they need, and that she is given every possible chance to recover.

The Isle of Wight MP has previously worked with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Eating Disorders and led a Westminster Hall debate earlier this year on preventing deaths linked to eating disorders.

During that debate, the Minister for Care described reports of patients being offered end-of-life care as “deeply troubling”, stressing that “no one with an eating disorder should ever feel treatment has reached a point of no return.”

In response to Mr Quigley’s question, the Prime Minister praised him as “a powerful advocate for change” and confirmed that ministers will urgently review the case and ensure everyone with eating disorders receives the help they need.
