Isle of Wight indie specialists ugly ozo have released their brand new single ‘hi, how are you?’ via REX RECS.

The project is the anxious brainchild of artist Jessica Baker, with ugly ozo acting as a sonic diary of a chronic oversharer, laying bare the rawest corners of the female experience.

Formed just a year ago, the trio is completed by Jessica’s sister Boo Baker on bass and Tristan Northard on drums, and they are quickly becoming one of the most talked-about emerging indie acts in the UK.

The band’s unrelenting live energy and infectious sound has already earned praise from DIY Magazine, Dork Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Rough Trade, Notion and Under The Radar following the release of their 2025 debut EP ‘stargirl’.

Radio support has also come from BBC 6 Music, including shows hosted by Iggy Pop, Nathan Shepherd, Chris Hawkins and Amy Lamé, as well as John Kennedy on Radio X and Cheryl Waters on KEXP.

Now signed to REX RECS — the new indie label founded by producer Macks Faulkron of North London’s REX Studio — ugly ozo join a roster that includes Caroline Polachek, Confidence Man, Daniel Avery, Picture Parlour and She’s In Parties.

The band continue to build momentum, following a sold-out headline show at The Shacklewell Arms last autumn.

With a second EP due this spring and a busy run of festival and live dates ahead, including a Dork HYPE 2026 show at London’s iconic 100 Club last week, ugly ozo’s profile is set to rise even further.

Speaking about the new single, which was written during a period of burnout and emotional exhaustion, Jessica Baker said the track confronts depression head-on.

“I wrote ‘hi, how are you?’ at a time when everything felt pretty hollow and grey,” she explained.
“I felt like I really was running on empty, just plodding through the motions of every day without really feeling any fulfilment or satisfaction.
"This track is kind of like a conversation between myself and my inner rival — like I’m playing tug of war between self-doubt and determination.”

Ugly ozo’s ‘hi, how are you?’ is out now via REX RECS and available on all major digital platforms.
