Islanders are being urged to take extra care when exercising today as temperatures climb into the high 20s and 30s across the Isle of Wight.
The Isle of Wight Council has issued advice for anyone planning to take part in sport, fitness activities or outdoor exercise during the hottest day of the year so far.
People are being encouraged to avoid training or competing between 11:00 and 15:00, when temperatures are expected to peak. Instead, activities should be rescheduled where possible or moved to shaded areas.
The warning comes as parts of the Island could see temperatures reach between 30°C and 35°C, with some inland locations potentially climbing as high as 38°C this afternoon, according to local forecasters.
Those exercising are advised to wear light, loose-fitting clothing, apply sunscreen, wear a hat and take regular breaks in the shade.
The council is also reminding Islanders to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of cool fluids before, during and after activity, while avoiding alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks.
After exercising, people are encouraged to cool down with cold towels or showers and to check on teammates and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
Indoor sports venues and gyms are also being advised to keep spaces as cool as possible by closing curtains and windows on sun-facing sides of buildings.
The advice comes as several Island schools have opted to finish early today due to the extreme temperatures, while transport services continue to operate largely as normal across the Solent.
