The Isle of Wight Council has awarded Veolia a short-term contract to provide consultancy services for its integrated waste management contract.

The three-month agreement will run until 31 March 2026 and will see the resource management company support the council as it plans the future of waste and recycling services on the Island.

Alongside the consultancy work, the council has confirmed it is in active discussions with Veolia about the company potentially managing residual waste treatment, household waste and recycling collections, as well as household waste recycling centres, for a two-year period.

Following this interim arrangement, the council would then move to tender for a longer-term waste management provider.

The discussions form part of the council’s commitment to maintaining service continuity and ensuring a smooth transition following the planned exit of the current provider.

Both parties say the priority is to minimise disruption for residents and businesses, with a collaborative approach aimed at keeping essential services running smoothly.

Veolia currently holds 18 integrated waste management contracts with local authorities across the UK and has decades of experience delivering municipal recycling and waste services.

The company also manages the nearby Hampshire integrated waste management contract.

Natasha Dix, the council’s service director for waste, environment and planning, said maintaining services is the council’s main focus.

“Our priority is to ensure continuity of essential waste and recycling services for residents and businesses on the Island,” she said.
“By working closely with Veolia during this consultancy period, we are taking proactive steps to maintain high standards and prepare for a smooth transition to a longer-term solution.”
