Proposed funding cuts to Mountbatten Hospice could have “devastating consequences” for Islanders, according to a new report highlighting the community’s strong and emotional response.

The issue will be discussed at the adult social care, public health and housing needs committee at County Hall this Thursday (11 September).

In June, NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight announced plans to withdraw £1.4 million a year in funding for the hospice — a reduction of around 40% by 2026/27.

Healthwatch Isle of Wight says it received almost 1,000 pieces of feedback from residents between May and July, with nearly one in five comments relating to end-of-life care.

Its report describes the “shock and distress” Islanders feel over the cuts, as well as personal testimonies praising Mountbatten’s “outstanding care.”

One resident wrote:

“I am devastated to see that the funding for our incredible hospice is being significantly reduced.
"My son passed away there at just 33 years old. The hospice looked after him as one of their own and allowed him, his wife and children to make some precious memories.”

Another said:

“In March 2020 my beloved husband died at the hospice following a brutal cancer diagnosis.
"It was only when Mountbatten and their palliative care expertise were involved that his pain was finally managed.
"The NHS did their best, but the difference in care was like night and day.”

The report also raises concerns over a lack of engagement with the community, the Island’s unique circumstances being “overlooked,” and the potential knock-on effect on other services if Mountbatten’s funding is reduced.

In its own update, the Integrated Care Board (ICB) said it intends to “retain and enhance” Mountbatten’s support but acknowledged the “challenging financial position” the changes would bring.

It confirmed interim funding of £527,000 has been agreed to allow for a transition to the proposed new contract from April 2026.

The committee meeting begins at 5pm on Thursday at County Hall, Newport.
