Islanders are being urged to remain vigilant after police revealed reports of metal theft across Hampshire have risen sharply.
Between December 2025 and February 2026, offences increased by 114% compared with the same period the previous year.
Officers say rising metal prices are helping drive the trend, with criminals targeting items such as scrap metal, copper cabling, piping from empty homes undergoing renovation, agricultural batteries, fencing, catalytic converters and roofing materials.
Police are working with regional and national partners to identify organised criminal networks linked to the offences.
Last month, two men were arrested in Andover on suspicion of travelling across borders to steal copper cable.
They were later bailed while investigations by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary Country Watch Rural Crime Task Force continue.
Patrols are also being stepped up in rural and isolated areas — including locations across the Isle of Wight — where repeat offending has been reported, while officers review incidents to identify patterns and pursue new lines of enquiry.
Residents and businesses are being encouraged to take steps to protect property.
Rural battery owners are advised to mark batteries with their postcode and paint them pink to deter thieves, while those renovating empty properties should keep removed fittings out of sight.
Businesses and site managers are also urged to watch for suspicious activity such as unfamiliar vehicles near access points, people loitering around depots or damaged fencing.
Anyone who spots suspicious activity should report it by calling 101 or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If a crime is in progress, dial 999.
