Islanders are being urged to check whether they qualify for a Blue Badge before applying following a rise in unsuccessful applications.
The Isle of Wight Council says more people are applying for badges, but an increasing number are being refused because they do not meet national eligibility criteria.
Officers say some residents have admitted applying "just in case" they qualify or because they believe a badge will provide access to free parking.
The scheme is intended for people who experience very considerable difficulty undertaking journeys because of a disability or health condition.
Laura Gaudion, the council's director of Adult Social Care and Housing Needs, said a diagnosis alone does not guarantee eligibility, with applications assessed according to national government criteria.
Residents considering an application are being encouraged to check the official guidance before applying.
