A group of determined Islanders are preparing to take on the gruelling Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge this weekend to raise vital funds for The Wight Brainy Bunch.
The challenge, taking place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd May, will see participants walk, jog or run up to 106 kilometres along the Island’s spectacular—but demanding—coastal route.
Among those taking part are mother and daughter Debbie and Eloise Radestock, who will tackle the 50km southern loop.
Debbie had to defer her place last year while undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumour, making this year’s challenge especially meaningful as she joins Eloise on the course.
Also stepping up is Sophie White, who completed the 25km route last year and has doubled her distance this time around in support of a cause close to her heart.
She said:
“This year I am doing it for a wonderful charity that has helped my aunt in more ways than you can imagine with her brain tumour diagnosis.
"I’ve seen just how much this charity does every day to support people, so I couldn’t think of a better charity to donate to this year.”
The Wight Brainy Bunch was founded by Ryde firefighter Mark Grimes following his own brain tumour diagnosis in 2015.
The charity now provides emotional support and financial assistance to families across the Isle of Wight affected by the condition.
A spokesperson for the charity said:
“We are so grateful to Deb, Eloise and Sophie for taking on the Isle of Wight Ultra.
"This cause is deeply personal to all of them.
"They’ve seen first-hand the impact brain tumours can have on families, but have chosen to turn that into something positive to help others going through the same.”
