An islander diagnosed with bowel cancer is swimming throughout June to raise vital funds for Bowel Cancer UK, the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity.
Elaine Turner, from Ryde, is taking part in the charity’s Swim15 challenge for the second time and is set to take a 15-minute dip in the sea at least 15 times this month, despite her having a stoma and currently receiving chemotherapy.
All funds raised by Elaine will go towards supporting Bowel Cancer UK’s work to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.
At the time of writing, Elaine’s crowdfunder has raised over £250 for the charity, over £100 more than her £150 target.
Elaine said:
“I was diagnosed with bowel cancer four years ago and was given two years to live. I am still here and feel great thankfully.
“If I can do something I love to raise money for such a good cause, then into the sea I will go!”
Bowel Cancer UK’s Swim15 is a virtual swimming event held every June which asks participants to swim a challenge of their choice to raise funds for the charity.
Elaine’s challenge will see her swim at least 15 times in June, staying in the sea for at least 15 minutes – as she did in 2023 when she last completed the challenge.
Elaine started her challenge on 1st June and has already taken to the water seven times, putting her well on track to hit her 15-swim target.
“I want people to know that a diagnosis isn't cut and dried,” Elaine added. “I had a stoma fitted and have chemotherapy every other week. I count myself very lucky, and I’m so grateful for all the treatment I have had and am still receiving.
“I want to raise more awareness of bowel cancer, and I love sea swimming, so this is the perfect challenge for me.”
Luke Squires, Director of Fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK, added:
"We’re incredibly grateful to Elaine for diving into our Swim15 challenge again after she first took the plunge two years ago.
"Every 12 minutes, someone like Elaine, is diagnosed with bowel cancer, making it the UK's fourth most common cancer.
"The money Elaine raises will help us continue to raise awareness of the disease and its symptoms, provide expert information and support to patients and their families, fund vital research, and campaign for early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care.
"We hope that Elaine knows the difference that her support will make, and we wish her the best of luck with her challenge!”
