Students across the Isle of Wight are celebrating today (Thursday) after receiving their long-awaited GCSE results – with both Christ the King College and Priory School reporting outstanding achievements.

Christ the King College hails “vintage” year

At Christ the King College, Headteacher Andrew Montrose described this year’s Year 11 cohort as a “vintage” group, praising their resilience after a secondary education disrupted by the pandemic.

For the first time since 2019, the school’s headline figures are expected to meet national benchmarks for English and Maths.

Nearly 75% of all 1,583 grades awarded were 4–9, with strong improvements across most subjects, including for disadvantaged pupils and those with additional needs.

Mr Montrose said:

“This group of amazing young people have flourished after a challenging start to their secondary education, overcoming adversity with courage and determination.
"These results accelerate the upwards trajectory we are on as a school and are a testament to the hard work of passionate and loyal teaching and support staff, and the unwavering support of parents and governors.”

The results follow on from last week’s Sixth Form success, when almost 90% of Christ the King students secured university places, with more than 40% going to Russell Group institutions.

Priory School: 100% Pass Rate

Priory School has also reported an exceptional set of results. The overall pass rate was 100%, with more than 90% of grades at 9–4 (equivalent to the old A*–C). Nearly a quarter of grades were at 9–7 (A*–A).

Core subjects saw particularly strong outcomes, with a 100% pass rate in English, Maths (Higher) and Science.

Principal David Lloyd said:

“This is the outcome of two years of dedication and hard work by pupils and staff.
"I congratulate the cohort on their well-deserved grades which form an excellent foundation for post-16 study and work.
"I hope they enjoy a day of celebration and memory making with friends, family and staff.”

Council Congratulates Students Across the Island

The Isle of Wight Council has extended congratulations to all students collecting their results today, recognising GCSEs as a major milestone.

Cllr Paul Brading, Chair of the Children’s Services, Education and Skills Committee, said:

“I would like to extend my congratulations to every young person who has collected their GCSE exam results today.
"If your results are not what you expected, there is lots of help out there to support you in taking the next steps towards your future learning.
"It’s also a great time to recognise and say thank you to the teachers, leaders and schools for the hard work and support they provide.”

Naomi Carter, Service Director for Education, Inclusion and Access, added:

“GCSEs are a significant milestone, but whatever the results, there are plenty of options available to help achieve a bright future.
"Today marks years of hard work for students and teachers alike. I wish all students every success as they move on to further education, employment or training.”
