Island Roads is set to begin a major resurfacing programme next month, with improvements planned for 14 key sections of highway across the Island.
The three-week project, starting Monday 10 November, will see around seven kilometres of road resurfaced — part of the company’s ongoing work to keep the Island’s network in good condition.
The roads due for improvement include:
Mayfield Road, East Cowes
Howgate Road, Bembridge
Quay Lane, Brading
Shore Road, Ventnor
High Street and Heathfield Road, Freshwater
Arctic Road/Bridge Road, Cowes
Parkhurst Road, Newport
The locations were chosen following Island Roads’ annual condition survey, which identifies sections most in need of repair.
Although Parkhurst Road appears to be in good condition, resurfacing there is needed to improve skid resistance.
The work follows this spring’s surface dressing programme, which improved 14 kilometres of road across the Island.
November’s resurfacing will involve removing the old surface before laying a new one, improving ride quality and durability.
Most work will take place during the day, but Parkhurst Road will be resurfaced overnight to minimise disruption to traffic.
Full road closures will be in place during work periods, with roads reopened as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Advance warning signs will be displayed ahead of each scheme, and affected residents will receive letters explaining local access arrangements.
An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“We’re delivering this programme late in the year to avoid the busy summer months.
"While some disruption is unavoidable, we’d like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation.
"The sections being resurfaced are among those most in need of attention, and we hope the short-term inconvenience will be outweighed by the long-term benefits.”
The schedule may be subject to change depending on weather or ground conditions.
