Island Roads has agreed a long-term partnership with Newport-based Groundsell Contracting Ltd to deliver a range of services across the Island.
Under the new deal, Groundsell will take on responsibilities including grass cutting and vegetation management across the Isle of Wight’s highway network.
The initial contract will run for six years, with the option of a rolling annual extension, meaning the partnership could continue for the remainder of the Highways PFI contract.
The agreement also strengthens Island Roads’ use of local suppliers.
The company says it spent around £5.2 million with Isle of Wight businesses last year and currently employs around 200 local people.
Groundsell, a family-run firm based on Forest Road in Newport, has previously worked with Island Roads, particularly providing tree-related services and supporting operations during severe weather events.
Island Roads Service Director Steve Ashman said the company is pleased to expand its relationship with a trusted local contractor.
He said Groundsell has built a strong reputation for high-quality work and has consistently delivered, even in challenging conditions.
He added that using local companies remains a priority, helping to strengthen resilience, bring valuable local knowledge, and support the Island’s economy.
Mr Ashman also paid tribute to the previous contractor idverde, with staff set to transfer across to Groundsell as part of the new arrangement.
Groundsell Contracts Manager Paul White said the company is delighted to be expanding its work with Island Roads, describing the partnership as a positive and long-standing relationship.
