Isle of Wight West MP Richard Quigley has used a Westminster Hall debate to highlight the “unique and magnified” challenges facing women and girls on the Island — and to call for stronger Government support.

Speaking on Tuesday (2 December), he said poor cross-Solent transport is deepening existing inequalities, making it harder for women to access healthcare, secure jobs or escape domestic abuse.

Richard also raised concerns about the lack of a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) at St Mary’s Hospital, meaning survivors of rape or sexual assault must travel to the mainland — often immediately after an attack — to receive support.

Domestic abuse services were another key issue, with cases rising 25% between 2018 and 2023.

The Island currently has just one refuge with six rooms, forcing some women to leave the Island entirely to find safety.

Isle of Wight East MP Joe Robertson also contributed to the debate, signalling cross-party concern.

Richard concluded that the “extra burdens” placed on Island women and girls have become “a burden too far”, adding: “They deserve better, and I will keep fighting to make sure they get it.”

Responding for the Government, the Equalities Minister praised Richard’s commitment to tackling inequalities and acknowledged the importance of addressing the specific challenges faced by women and girls on the Isle of Wight.
