Island libraries are inviting readers of all ages to rediscover the joy of reading with the return of their popular Book Bingo challenge, marking the National Year of Reading 2026.
The year-long UK-wide campaign encourages people to “go all in” on reading, at a time when busy lifestyles and digital distractions have led to a decline in reading for pleasure.
From 2 February, libraries in Brighstone, Freshwater, Lord Louis, Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde and Ventnor will be inviting visitors to sign up for the challenge.
Each branch is offering a £50 book token in a prize draw at the end of the year.
Participants will receive a Book Bingo Card with 25 scratch-off squares, each revealing a surprise reading challenge.
Library staff will be on hand to help match readers with the perfect book for each task.
Development librarian Louise Emery said:
“People love the surprise element — it sparks so many brilliant conversations between readers and staff.
"Every year we hear from people who tell us they’ve picked up books they never would have chosen, and ended up absolutely loving them.”
Anyone who completes all 25 challenges by 11 December will be entered into their library’s draw to win a book token, generously funded by Friends of the Library groups.
With seven branches taking part, that means seven chances to win.
A children’s version of Book Bingo is also available, allowing the whole family to join in the fun.
