Concerns over access to healthcare services on the Isle of Wight have been brought to light in a new report from Healthwatch Isle of Wight.

The independent health watchdog’s latest findings, covering the period from 13 September to 12 October, reveal growing frustrations among residents about accessing pharmacies, community mental health services, and online GP appointments.

Of the 280 pieces of feedback received, 57% were negative (160 responses), 2% mixed or neutral, and 41% positive (116 responses).

The two most frequently raised issues were GP services and pharmacy access.

One Island resident told Healthwatch:

“I’m trying to get my medication.
"Apparently, Jhoots in Sandown are closed permanently, which is why they haven’t responded to my voicemail messages for two days.
“If I could go to another pharmacy in the area it would be ideal, but they just refer me back to my GP.
"I’m considering stopping my medication because it’s becoming so stressful to obtain.”

Another added:

“Several times I’ve called the mental health crisis team during their operating hours, only to be met with a message telling me to call 111.
"Tonight, it was over an hour before they were due to close.”

In response, a spokesperson for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight thanked Healthwatch for its report and said the feedback would help shape improvements.

They said:

“Our GPs and pharmacies are seeing more patients than ever, and we now have multi-professional teams working in GP practices to provide specialist care where it’s needed.
“Dental access continues to improve, with further increases planned for 2026.
"We are continually striving to ensure the NHS delivers the best possible care for everyone as part of our work towards the Ten Year Health Plan — ensuring the service is sustainable and fit for the future.”
