A group of fundraisers supporting Mountbatten Isle of Wight are preparing to take on an epic challenge, sledding 240km through the snowy wilderness of northern Sweden while each guiding their own team of husky dogs.

After a short acclimatisation, the team will begin the challenge on 20th March, finishing on 27th March at the world-famous Icehotel.

So far, the group has raised more than £40,000 to support the hospice’s 24/7 expert and compassionate care, around 85% of which is delivered in Islanders’ homes.

Among those taking part is Adam, whose mum was cared for by Mountbatten before she died from lung cancer 18 months ago.

“I’m taking on this challenge because I’ve witnessed first-hand the extraordinary work Mountbatten does,” said fellow fundraiser Ed.

Zoe, who previously climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for the charity, is completing the trek in memory of her mum.

She said Mountbatten nurses cared for her at home and supported the whole family during a difficult time.

The expedition is being supported by Global Adventure Challenges.

Harri McNeil, from Mountbatten Isle of Wight’s fundraising team, said:

“It’s been a privilege getting to know our incredible fundraisers. Their efforts have already raised over £40,000, helping Mountbatten deliver expert end-of-life care to Islanders and their families.”
