The leader of the Isle of Wight Council has raised concerns over the future of local authority funding, warning that headline figures do not reflect the reality facing the Island.
Councillor Phil Jordan was responding to new correspondence from Government, which suggests a funding increase of around 17%.
However, Cllr Jordan says the situation is “more complicated”, with rising costs continuing to place significant pressure on council services.
He pointed to increasing demand and inflation, particularly in adult social care, children’s services and housing, as key factors impacting finances.
Cllr Jordan also expressed concern about changes to funding previously allocated to the Isle of Wight, which recognised the additional costs of delivering services on an island.
He said factors such as travel, logistics, workforce challenges and limited local markets continue to create higher costs compared to mainland authorities.
According to the council leader, the latest funding settlement could leave the authority £11 million worse off over the next three years.
Despite the challenges, he sought to reassure residents that the council is working to manage its finances responsibly, while continuing to deliver essential services.
Cllr Jordan said the authority is already making efficiencies and changes, but warned there are limits to what can be achieved without affecting frontline services.
He added that protecting vital services and supporting vulnerable residents remains a priority, while the council continues to press Government for a funding model that better reflects the Island’s unique circumstances.
