It’s been half a century since Island Bakeries Cricket Club first took to the pitch – and this weekend they’re marking the milestone with a special President’s Day at Porchfield Cricket Club.

The Binstead-based bakery that gave the team its name closed back in 1984, but the spirit of fun, friendship and friendly competition has kept the club thriving.

Founded in 1975 during the heyday of Isle of Wight works teams, Island Bakeries CC is now one of the last survivors of that era.

On Saturday 24 August, players past and present will gather as President Dene Richards’ XI face Chairman Alan Marriott’s XI, with former bakery owner Bill Cooper attending as guest of honour.

From their first match against Radio Rentals in 1975, through 30-game seasons in the 80s, to their current home in Porchfield, the club has welcomed nearly 600 players over the years.

Today, they still tour annually, host friendly matches against Island and visiting sides, and recently celebrated their first-ever IW Indoor League title.

President Dene Richards said:

“Many works teams and cricket clubs have fallen by the wayside over the years, but Bakeries just seem to get stronger. I’m proud to be part of one of the last beacons of social cricket on the Island.”
