An ice warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with residents urged to take extra care when travelling.

The Isle of Wight Met Service issued the warning at 8am today (Friday January 9) and it will be in force from 1am until 11am tomorrow.

Forecasters say temperatures are expected to fall to freezing — and possibly slightly below — in some parts of the Island overnight.

This could lead to ice forming on roads and pavements, particularly in rural areas where surface water remains from recent rainfall.

Drivers are being warned about the risk of hazardous conditions, including near-invisible “black ice”, which can make roads especially dangerous.

Pedestrians are also advised to take care, as footpaths and walkways could become slippery during the early hours and into the morning.

People travelling overnight or early on Saturday are encouraged to allow extra time for journeys and to take appropriate precautions.
