More than 600 properties in Ryde were left without electricity this evening (Saturday) following an unexpected power outage.

The interruption happened shortly before 18:00, impacting customers in the PO33 2 and PO33 3 postcode areas.

Residents in other parts of the town, as well as in Shanklin, also reported lights briefly flickering around the same time.

The outage triggered the fire alarm system at the BT Telephone Exchange in Ryde, where backup generators automatically switched on. Fire crews from Ryde were called as a precaution.

Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are working near West Street to restore supplies.

Some homes and businesses have already had their power reinstated, with the remaining properties expected to be reconnected by around 23:00.

Anyone seeking further information can call the free power cut helpline on 105 or contact SSEN via social media at @ssencommunity.
