A horse has died after becoming trapped in deep mud in a field on the outskirts of Ryde on Saturday evening.
Emergency services were called at around 6pm to reports of a horse stuck in mud off Ashey Road, close to the steam railway line.
Crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene, including the specialist Animal Rescue Unit from Newport.
Firefighters deployed equipment designed for large animal rescues and worked for a considerable time in an effort to free the 17-hand horse safely.
Despite sustained efforts by emergency responders, the animal could not be released.
A veterinary surgeon in attendance made the decision to euthanise the horse to prevent any further suffering.
The incident was formally stood down at around 8.15pm, although activity at the scene continued later into the evening.
