A new Homeshare scheme is launching on the Isle of Wight, bringing older residents together with vetted younger people for companionship and light household support.

The scheme is being delivered locally by Two Generations CIC.

Under Homeshare, older “Householders” with a spare room are matched with younger “Sharers,” who provide around ten hours a week of practical help such as cooking, shopping, and day-to-day tasks, as well as friendly company.

In return, Sharers receive affordable accommodation—offering a lifeline amid rising living costs.

The scheme is not a care service—Sharers do not provide medical or personal care.

Instead, the focus is on reassurance, companionship, and everyday support that helps older people remain independent at home.

Both parties pay a small monthly fee to Two Generations for ongoing support and safeguarding.

Homeshare is already well-established across the UK for reducing loneliness, improving safety, and helping people stay independent longer.

Safety measures include enhanced DBS and reference checks, home visits, and ongoing support to ensure every match is secure and suitable.

Laura Gaudion, director of adult social care and housing at the Isle of Wight Council, said:

"Many older residents want to stay in the homes they love but would benefit from a little extra support or company.
"Homeshare offers a safe, reassuring and community-minded solution."
