An historic farm barn at ‘very real risk of collapse’ could be turned into residential accommodation.

Mr Scudder has lodged a proposal with County Hall for a change of use of the owl barn at the Grade II listed Rowlands Farmhouse on Rowlands Lane, near Ashey.

The stone structure helps to explain the development of a rural farmstead in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and therefore carries weighty historical significance, according to a statement from Mr Scudder’s agent, Leah Mew Architecture.

Proposed works have been carefully considered and will involve a considerable amount of repair, it said.

“The barn is currently in a precarious state of repair and it is at very real risk of collapse.
“In a restored state the value of the asset would be higher as it was once clearly an attractive 18th century stone barn.
“It is proposed to convert the barn into ancillary accommodation for the applicant, whilst retaining as much of the character and existing features currently in situ.”

The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on application 25/01666/FUL finishes on January 7 and a decision is expected on January 23.
