The Isle of Wight is a nationally important stronghold for our native red squirrels, and ongoing monitoring is vital to ensure their protection.

This autumn, Becky Watts is carrying out an all-island survey of woodlands over 1 hectare to record the presence or absence of red squirrels as part of the Island’s wider conservation strategy.

Woodland owners who are happy to have their land surveyed can contact Helen at wightsquirrels@hotmail.com.

While corridors between woodlands have been improved through studies and tree planting over the last 20 years, urban areas are now the next focus.

This year, the survey is starting in Ryde.

There have been occasional sightings of young squirrels moving through the town, but it is unclear whether any remain in gardens long-term.

Many gardens contain mature trees that could provide important habitat for these native creatures.

Garden owners in Ryde are being asked to report any red squirrel sightings from 2025, including:

  • Dates (approximate is fine)

  • Postcode

  • Coat colour (reds come in shades of red, brown, and even grey)

This information will help conservationists determine whether the same squirrels are moving around the area.

Sightings can be reported to Helen via email at wightsquirrels@hotmail.com, or by phone on 611003 (leave a message with your number for a return call).

By taking part, local residents can help protect and grow the Island’s red squirrel population for years to come.
