A head-on collision involving two cars closed a key road in and out of East Cowes this morning (Saturday), causing significant disruption.
Emergency services were called just before 10:45 to the scene near Racecourse roundabout, where a black Ford Kuga and a white electric Volkswagen Up, owned by the Isle of Wight Council, collided.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage, with occupants helped from the cars before being taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment.
Police, ambulance crews and fire services all attended the incident, with closures put in place around Racecourse roundabout while enquiries are carried out.
Motorists are being diverted, leading to heavy congestion on surrounding routes between Wootton and East Cowes.
Traffic leaving East Cowes is reportedly backing up as far as Osborne House, with long delays also affecting the floating bridge.
Southern Vectis has introduced a shuttle bus service between Waitrose and Osborne Roundabout until further notice.
We are awaiting information as to when the road will reopen.
