The Hare and Hounds pub has officially closed following a month-long consultation period.

The well-known Downend venue, run by Greene King, had been under review since the end of March, with its future under consideration.

The company has now confirmed the 18th-century pub will no longer reopen, bringing an end to a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

A spokesperson for Greene King said:

“Following a period of team member consultation, we can confirm that the Hare & Hounds has now closed.
"We are grateful to everyone who has supported the Hare & Hounds over the years, and we look forward to welcoming them into our other pubs in the local area soon.”

Greene King says it has worked with staff to find alternative roles at other sites where possible.

Customers are being encouraged to visit other nearby pubs, including The Crab in Shanklin and The Folly in East Cowes.

The closure follows earlier speculation about the future of the site, which sits close to Robin Hill Adventure Park.
