Island drivers will soon have more choice when it comes to topping up their electric vehicles, after plans were approved for a new charging hub at Morrisons in Lake.
The scheme — put forward by Motor Fuel Group — will see eight new charging bays installed on the supermarket’s Newport Road site. Four EV chargers, along with a sub-station enclosure and other supporting equipment, are included in the development.
However, the upgrade does come at a cost: seven existing parking spaces will be lost to make way for the charging area.
Highways authority Island Roads raised no objection, saying the changes would not increase traffic or impact the local road network.
Any parking demand displaced by the works could be “safely accommodated” within the rest of Morrisons’ car park.
The application, number 25/00990/FUL, has now been given the go-ahead, although County Hall has yet to publish its full decision report.
The project is another step in expanding the Island’s EV charging network as more motorists make the switch to electric.
