Pet owners on the Isle of Wight are being invited to take advantage of free welfare clinics being run by RSPCA Isle of Wight for cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.

The drop-in clinics run throughout the year and are designed to offer practical help and friendly advice, supporting Island pet owners to keep their animals happy and healthy.

Sessions are held at the RSPCA Island Animal Centre near Rookley, between 11am and 3pm, with no need to book in advance.

The RSPCA’s experienced team can help with a range of routine care, including grooming, teeth and ear checks, nail clipping and scent gland cleaning.

All support is offered free of charge, although a suggested £3 donation per animal is welcomed to help cover the cost of running the clinics.

Carrie-Anne Turrell, who leads the RSPCA’s Small Animal Team, said the clinics are hugely valued by the local community.

“Pet owners on the Island really appreciate our welfare clinics.
"Tasks like clipping nails can feel daunting, so we’re there to help and to answer any questions people may have about caring for their pets,” she said.
“We love meeting lots of rabbits and guinea pigs and being able to offer this service to our community.”

The RSPCA is also launching cat welfare clinics, starting later this month.

Georgina Davies, who leads cat care at the RSPCA Animal Centre, said:

“We’re excited to be offering our first welfare clinic for cats this January.
"Alongside a simple health check, we’re happy to provide practical help and advice on a cat’s health, diet and behaviour.”

Low-cost microchipping is also available at the clinics, costing £10 per animal.

The team can also check that owners’ contact details are up to date on the national database.

Microchipping gives pets the best chance of being reunited with their owners if they are lost or stolen and is a legal requirement for dogs and cats.

The next cat welfare clinic will take place on Sunday 25 January, with further sessions planned for April, July and October.

The next rabbit and guinea pig welfare clinic is on Sunday 15 February, with additional dates in May, August and November.
