Island shoppers will be able to enjoy free parking in council-run long-stay car parks this Saturday afternoon (6 December) as part of a drive to support independent businesses.
The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that all its long-stay car parks will be free to use between 12pm and 6pm in celebration of Small Business Saturday — a national event encouraging people to shop locally.
Pier Square car park in Yarmouth, which the council manages on behalf of Yarmouth Harbour Commission, will also be free for the entire day.
Free Parking in Ventnor
Ventnor Town Council is adding further support by offering all-day free parking in the Pound Lane, Market Street and Dudley Road car parks on both Saturday 6 December and Saturday 13 December.
Encouraging Islanders to Shop Local
Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, chair of the economy, regeneration, transport and infrastructure committee, said the initiative aims to make it easier for Islanders to visit their local high streets.
“Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities,” she said.
“This is a great opportunity for people to explore what’s on their doorstep and support the traders who make our towns and villages unique.
“Free parking makes it easier for everyone to get involved and enjoy what the Island has to offer.”
Supporting the Island Economy
Shopping locally helps keep money within the Island’s economy, supports jobs, and strengthens the unique character of towns and villages.
Every pound spent with an independent business makes a noticeable difference to the wider community.
Small Business Saturday encourages residents to “think local”, with many businesses marking the occasion by offering special deals or hosting events.
Further details on council-run car parks can be found on the Isle of Wight Council’s website.
